As per the new release of the 16th edition of AISC manual, applicable ASTM Specifications are revised. In this blog, we discuss the preferred material specifications for commonly used structural shapes, emphasizing the expertise of best steel structure detailing companies in USA.
W-shapes: The preferred material specification for W-shapes is ASTM A992 (Fy = 50 ksi, Fu = 65 ksi). The W-shape grade remains consistent with previous AISC specifications, indicating that most steel structure detailing companies and designers adhere to these standards.
Channels Shapes: Both Standard Channels and Miscellaneous Channels (MC) are most commonly available as ASTM A992. Some smaller channels less than 8 in. may still only be available as A36 material. ASTM A992 offers superior material properties, such as higher yield strength and better weldability , qualities sought after by any Steel Structure detailing and Structural Engineering Service Company.
Angles: ASTM A572 Grade 50 is the recommended material specification for angles. While angles may be available in other strengths, the preferred material is outlined in Table 2-4.
Rectangular (and square) HSS: For rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS), ASTM A500 Grade C (Fy = 50 ksi, Fu = 62 ksi) is the recommended material specification. Notable options for HSS include A1065 and A1085. A1085 (Fy = 50 ksi, Fu = 65 ksi) offers actual wall thickness and tighter corner radii tolerances, beneficial for design. This level of detail is a hallmark of leading steel structure detailing companies.
Round HSS: The preferred material specification for round HSS is ASTM A500 Grade C (Fy = 50 ksi, Fu = 62 ksi). Compared to the 46-ksi yield stress that was formerly the standard for round HSS designated as A500 Grade C, this is a major change. The revision to ASTM A500 Grade C in 2021 introduced this change. A1085 (Fy = 50 ksi, Fu = 65 ksi) may also be specified for round HSS members, providing actual wall thickness.
Steel pipe: The Manual lists ASTM A53 Grade B (Fy = 35 ksi, Fu = 60 ksi) as the preferred material specification for steel pipes used in structural frames. This specification is crucial for any steel structure detailing company striving for excellence in structural engineering.
